Karen Goeller Throws Lakewood BlueClaws First Pitch

"I  was honored to throw a first pitch at a professional baseball game." This was the first comment by Karen Goeller, gymnastics and fitness author.

 

Karen Goeller, threw out the first pitch at the Lakewood BlueClaws on 8/22/09. That was the day we all thought it would rain at the BlueClaws stadium. It was hot and humid, but once the game started everyone seemed to forget the miserable weather.

 

Karen Goeller has been a gymnast and gymnastics coach since the 1970's. That may be why she looked like she was doing a floor routine rather than throwing a baseball. And yes, the ball did reach home plate! Karen then shared, "I was surprised that I actually reached home plate because I have not thrown a ball in ages."

 

Karen Goeller was there promoting her gymnastics books and training services during the first ever Gymnastics Night at the BlueClaws stadium. Special thanks to BlueClaws for the photo!

Swing for Veterans Program: Attention Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans...

 

Swing Exercise: Double Crunch for CoreKaren Goeller, creator of Swing Set Fitness wants to thank you for your remarkable service by donating her time, offering FREE Swing Set workouts. She is looking forward to working with injured and non-injured veterans. There are plenty of exercises that can be performed by people with injuries to one area of their body. The non-injured areas of the body can often be exercised without disrupting the injured areas. The swing can support the bodyweight while certain exercises are performed.

 

Swing Exercise: SquatFor example, the squat exercise can be performed with the swing behind the back so that it is supporting the body weight while performing the exercise. Another example is the double crunch. That one is performed while sitting on top of the swing.

 

Goeller knows first hand about performing exercise while injured because she has successfully performed many swing workouts with her back injuries. She states that she was "surprised at how many exercises she could perform." So allow her to help you by participating in her Swing for Veterans Program. She will also offer help to the spouses of veterans because the couple can exercise together.

 

Rules: Each participant may receive one workout per week for up to three consecutive weeks, depending upon how full Karen's schedule becomes. Her schedule will fill very quickly. This is a first come, first served program. The swing workouts will take place at a playground in NJ. All workouts are weather-permitting. Applications will be accepted starting January 21, 2009. The workouts will begin in March 2009 and will continue as long as her schedule permits or until August of 2009. She reserves the right to turn away any potential client or stop training any client for any reason. All participants in this program must provide a doctor's note stating they can "train with a personal trainer outdoors and/or indoors." All participants must provide proof they are veterans from Iraq or Afghanistan.

In Full Swing at the PhillyFit Retreat...

Karen Goeller explains core exercises, flutter kicks and knee lifts, at the PhillyFit RetreatKaren Goeller, author of the Swing Fitness books, offered a swing workout seminar to a group of people attending the PhillyFit Retreat on January 31, 2008. This health and fitness event was for those in need of time to rejuvenate and get back into a fitness program.

The participants in this group ranged from stay at home moms who had not exercised in a very long time to those already in top shape including a tri-athlete and a martial artist. Although the participants were at different fitness levels, the swing workout was still appropriate for all. That is because each exercise can be modified for those new to the workout scene and those who are already in great shape.

Swing Fitness: Exercise with a swing!For example, the pull up can be performed above the swing or beneath the swing in a modified position. The person performing the modified pull up stands at a 45 degree angle holding the swing as they pull their chest toward the swing. With the modified pull up the person is only pulling a portion of their weight.

 

All of the participants had positive feedback during and after the event. The most common feedback received by Goeller was, "Great workout!" When asked about the event Karen Goeller stated, "I was nervous before we started because this was the first group I have worked with in a long time. A group class is so much different from an individual training session. Once the workout was in full swing everyone seemed to be very pleased as they moved through each exercise." Since this group included so many fitness professionals, the ideas continued to flow and the enthusiasm remained high. The people with exercise backgrounds helped those just starting to exercise.

 

Karen Goeller explains the leg exercise, squat.As Karen Goeller introduced each exercise she reminded the participants to hold the chains securely and make sure they were comfortable before they started to move. There were leg exercises, chest exercises, and core exercises among others. Karen Goeller asked the participants to perform core exercises such as flutter kicks and knee lifts.

 

This class lasted approximately one hour, but many workouts can be as short as 15 minutes. The benefits of this form of training are not only that the participant can gain strength or lose weight, but they can exercise outdoors, at the local playground. There is no need to purchase fitness equipment and those with children can exercise while their children play. We predict this training will become more popular as the warm weather arrives because it is so unique, enjoyable, and very convenient for so many adults.

Swing Fitness: Core ExerciseThe authors, Karen Goeller and Brian Dowd, will be attending other events to teach those interested in their swing exercise methods. They will also be available to sign books and give personal training sessions.
